Snapchat Content Removal Guide

How to Remove Snapchat Content

Removing Snapchat content depends on what was posted, where it appears and who published it. Learn how to manage your own Snaps, Stories, Chat content, Spotlight posts and Snap Map submissions, or report content posted by someone else.

!
Deleting and reporting are different.

You can manage content you control, but you cannot simply delete another person’s Snapchat content. Content published by someone else normally needs to be reported if you believe it violates Snapchat’s rules.

What Snapchat content do you want removed?

Snapchat content removal options

Content Possible action Important note
Your Story Snap Delete the individual Snap A full Story may contain several separate Snaps
Snap you sent in Chat Press and hold, then delete Others may see that a Snap was deleted

How to delete a Snap from your Snapchat Story

Snapchat Stories are made up of individual Snaps. If you want to remove an entire Story, you may need to remove each Snap contained in it.

1

Open your profile

Tap your Bitmoji or Story icon to open your account area.

2

Open the Story

Select the Story containing the Snap you want to remove.

3

Find the Snap

Navigate to the individual Snap you want to delete.

4

Delete the Snap

Use Snapchat’s delete option and confirm that you want to remove it.

Deleting an entire Story? Snapchat currently requires you to delete the individual Snaps that make up that Story rather than treating every Story as one single file.

How to delete a Snap you sent in Chat

Snapchat allows the sender of a Snap to delete it from a Chat, including Snaps that were previously saved in Chat.

Press and hold the Snap you sent and choose the delete option. Snapchat notes that other people in the conversation may be able to see that a Snap was deleted.

Deleting something does not guarantee that another person has never seen, saved or captured it.

Chat reminder

Deleting is not the same as undoing.

A recipient may already have opened the Snap or captured a copy through a screenshot or another method.

How to remove Spotlight or Snap Map content

Snapchat manages Spotlight and Snap Map submissions separately from ordinary Story Snaps.

Spotlight

Delete a Snap from Spotlight

Open your account and find the Spotlight & Snap Map area.

Press and hold the Snap you previously submitted and choose Delete Snap.

Snap Map

Delete a Snap from Snap Map

Open your Snapchat settings and navigate to Spotlight & Snap Map.

Find the Snap and use the delete option to remove it from Snapchat’s public surfaces.

!
Public content may have travelled further.

Snapchat states that Spotlight and Snap Map submissions are public content. If someone shared a copy outside Snapchat, deleting the original Snapchat submission does not necessarily remove that external copy.

How to report Snapchat content you do not control

If another person published the Snap or message, you cannot simply delete it from their account. Snapchat provides reporting tools for potential rule violations.

01

Open the content

Find the Snap or message that concerns you.

02

Press and hold

Open the available options for that content.

03

Select Report

Choose the reporting option shown by Snapchat.

04

Choose the correct reason

Explain the issue as accurately as possible.

Official reporting

In-app reporting is Snapchat’s preferred route.

Snapchat states that its in-app reporting feature is generally the fastest and best way to send potential safety violations to its review teams.

Reports are confidential, meaning the account being reported is not told who submitted the report.

Save useful evidence when the issue is important

Snapchat content can disappear or change quickly. Keep useful information when you may need to explain what happened later.

✓
Username

Record who posted or sent the content.

✓
Screenshot

Preserve relevant visual context where appropriate.

✓
Message context

Keep surrounding information relevant to the issue.

✓
Date and time

Record approximately when the content appeared.

✓
Original material

Keep originals if intellectual property is involved.

✓
Public location

Note whether it appeared in Story, Spotlight or Snap Map.

Deleting a Snap may not erase every copy

Snapchat attempts to remove deleted Snaps from its systems and recipients’ devices, but the platform notes that this may not always happen instantly.

Someone may also have taken a screenshot, captured the content using another device or shared public content somewhere outside Snapchat.

This is especially relevant for public Spotlight and Snap Map submissions.

Remember
  • Deleting is not guaranteed to erase screenshots
  • Public content may have been shared elsewhere
  • Reporting does not guarantee removal
  • Save evidence before content disappears
